The first ever Powersport Challenge took place at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham on Wednesday May 5th when the F1 John Player Special powerboat challenged the F1 Lotus 87 John Player Special racing car to a duel of straight acceleration over a distance of 220 yards. The three JPS powerboat team drivers were in attendence, Bob Spalding, Tom Percival and Francois Salabert, with Nigel Mansell representing the motor racing fraternity. After 4 heats, and a score of 2 all, Bob Spalding, who had recorded the fastest time over Tom Percival, prepared for the final heat against Nigel. As photographers clicked away, and journalists noted with avid interest, the green flag was waved and the two black and gold machines roared off for the final. A gust of head wind caught the tunnel of the boat lifting her off the water slightly, whilst Nigel managed to slip a length ahead and it was all over. The racing car had won the Powersport Challenge, but a few interesting points had been made. No-one was trying to prove that the powerboat could ever beat the car in a race, over an official race distance, for it would have been as pointless as putting an athlete against a swimmer. However, they were there to prove some points: that both sports are as exciting for spectators; both are equally dangerous; both require skill and judgement to survive. 1st run: Run 1 Tom Percival - Average speed: none Nigel Mansell - Average speed: 66.17 mph Run 2 Tom Percival - Average speed: 77.58 mph Nigel Mansell - Average speed: 74.38 mph Run 3 Bob Spalding - Average speed: 81.67 mph Nigel Mansell - Average speed: 73.65 mph Run 4 Bob Spalding - Average speed: 90.00 mph Nigel Mansell - Average speed: 74.75 mph FINAL RUN OFF -Bob Spalding - Average speed: 81.81 mph Terminal Speed: 100 mph Overall: 5.50 -Nigel Mansell - Average speed: 83.33 mph Terminal Speed: 116 mph Overall: 5.40 John Player powerboat Make: Velden hull Engine: 3.5 litre V8 Max Speed: 135 mph Driver: Bob Spalding Age: 41 Weight: 11st John Player racing car Make: Lotus 87 Engine: 3 litre V8 Cosworth Max Speed: 187 mph Driver: Nigel Mansell Age: 27 Weight: 11st 4lbs #f1 #retrof1 #teamlotus
