Here I present to you the sleek 1967 second generation mint-keyed Hermes 3000. This was the 28th typewriter I added to my collection, my having gotten it for a decent price on eBay. Generally, second generation machines go for less than the rounder first generation machines, but I have come to prefer the boxier second generation look. There tends to be a lot of hype around these machines per their feeling "buttery", but I was somewhat expectedly underwhelmed, finding that there is some inherent resistance due to how the ribbon advance and vibrator are actuated, whereby I would later learn that the Hermes Ambassador was the true exemplar of unmodded butteriness. Otherwise, it is a very nice machine, and I had a nice time bringing it with me to Mont-Tremblant by merit of the case cover being easily removed from the integrated case base. This is the second (technically third since I recorded the Adler Gabriele 25 first) of five typewriter videos recorded outside during a day when I had to supervise my two poodles who had to stay outside due to the air duct cleaning technician being in the house. This was around a month ago, whereby I didn't have a chance to edit these videos due to my being on a trip and having to work on a few new arrivals. 0:00 Introduction 2:13 Backspace, 2:16 Carriage lock 2:30 Carriage release 2:50 Typing feel 4:24 Ribbon cover removal and replacement. Both as well as the Noiseless Standard and Woodstock No. 5 have a "logarithmic" or "square root" (decreasingly increasing, or plateauing) force curve (force with respect to keypress displacement) while pressing the keys, each still having a unique "colouration" to their feel. My Olympia SM-4 has a hard to describe, lighter and more "direct" and "silky" feel to it. 12:41 Key feel mod for making the action feel quite smoother, but with a tradeoff. 13:24 More typing 16:27 Upper left view 18:56 Left view 21:04 Upper right view 21:36 With the ribbon cover removed 22:18 Closeup. It sounds monstrous here, perhaps my Samsung S21's "telescopic microphone" feature amplifying or enhancing some of the sounds when zoomed in, but this is really among my quieter typewriters alongside the Adler Gabriele 25, Smith-Corona Silent 4S, and of course the Remington Noiseless Portable. 22:53 Regarding the missing of spaces while typing at speed 23:49 More typing 26:08 Conclusion What you can expect to see on this channel: Soon: Typewriter (and maybe also switch and keyboard) collecting, "perfectionist" Lego builds and mods. Within a year: Romantic Era piano performances (Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Alkan etc.), programming, computer architecture, model ship building, worldbuilding?, conlangs?, philosophy? In the following years: Independent watchmaking, making a unique typewriters from scratch, "revolutionizing" the concert grand.
