The Thelonious Monk Quintet Sahib Shihab, alto sax; Milt Jackson, vibes; Thelonious Monk, piano; Al McKibbon, bass; Art Blakey, drums. WOR Studios, NYC, July 23, 1951 As was often the case in those years, the title of the composition “Eronel” should be read as a mirror image, resulting in the name Lenore, but... who is this Lenore? Probably Shihab Sahib's beloved woman. This is, so to speak, the “official” version. But Telonius Jr.'s version obviously has a completely different flavor: "Once, Monk and his musicians were performing at a club owned by a real gangster — the kind of guy who wouldn't hesitate to put a bullet between your eyes. His wife, oddly enough, was named Lenore. Then Thelonious said to Shihab: "We have to perform for that guy. We know he has a gun, we also know that his wife is very nice and that he loves her very much. But we also understand very well that he suspects you of having an affair with her. So I'm not going to play any song called ‘Lenore’. Come to this guy's club, play a song dedicated to his wife and wait for us all to get shot? No, thank you. We'll just take “Lenore,” flip the title around, and call it “Eronel.” The owner and the others won't understand anything, but you can tell her what's going on, and everyone will be happy.
