EC&M Tech Talk, Episode 11 — Flexible Cords and Flexible Cables

In this episode of “EC&M Tech Talk,” Randy Barnett, a journeyman electrician, electrical instructor, inspector, author, trainer, and electrical safety expert, discusses the construction, application, and NEC rules for the installation of flexible cords and flexible cables. OSHA 1910.305(g) addresses the rules for the installation and use for flexible cords and flexible cables in general industry. Referring to the NEC Art. 400, Flexible Cords and Flexible Cables, provides the most detailed information. For construction and typical uses, Table 400.4 provides the specifics, while examples are reviewed in the video. Randy presents close-up views of type SOOW and other varieties of cords and cables and explains both the construction and markings on the outer jacket. Each letter in the type designation has a particular meaning. For example, in type SOOW flexible cord, the “S” indicates the insulation is rated for 600V, while the “OO” indicates both the conductor insulation and the outer jacket are oil resistant. The “W” indicates usage is suitable for wet locations. Ampacity calculations are required for these cords and cables based upon their conditions of use, just as for other conductors. Ambient temperature corrections are made based upon the table in Art. 310. Adjustment factors for the number of conductors in the cord or cable are based upon a table in Art. 400. Always read all Notes under each table to ensure its proper use. Sec. 400.10 addresses Uses Permitted, and 400.12 addresses Uses Not Permitted. Pay particular attention to not only these sections when applying flexible cords and flexible cables, but also to the various tables and remaining information in Art. 400, Flexible Cords and Flexible Cables.
