Style: Swing, usually played at an up tempo. Form: A-A-B-A (32 Bars) [8-8-8-8] Intro: 8 Bars Key: D minor Harmony/Overview: The harmony of this composition is mainly functional. The A section begins with Imi - bII7, and continues with a II - V of bVIMaj7 before returning back to Imi with a V7. On the original recording the changes toward the end of the second A section differ slightly from the first, although in practice most musicians tend to treat all of the A sections the same. The bridge takes place in bII Major and revolves around IIImi7 - VI7 - IImi7 - V7. The melody is harmonized 3rds for most of the bridge on the original recording and this arrangement is oftentimes used in performances. Recordings: This song has been recorded over 50 times to date and was first introduced on the Wayne Shorter's album Night Dreamer in 1964. It has since been recorded by many notable musicians, such as Jeff "Tain" Watts, Joey Calderazzo, and Anthony Braxton. It is one of Shorter's many compositions to enter the standard repertoire and it continues to be performed frequently to this day.
