10/26/1968 Bruins at Maple Leafs (complete game broadcast) Bobby Orr

This video is the broadcast of the Oct. 26, 1968 National Hockey League game between the Boston Bruins and the Maple Leafs in Toronto (for score, see summary below). It aired on Hockey Night in Canada on the Canadian Broadcast Company. The announcers are Bill Hewitt on play by play and Brian McFarlane on color. After an impressive turnaround campaign in 1967-68, Bobby Orr and the Bruins face Toronto in an early season game at Maple Leaf Gardens, where they are in the midst of a long non-winning streak. Goalies Johnny Bower of Toronto and Gerry Cheevers of Boston shine, and it's obvious the Bruins' offense has yet to get going. Big guns Phil Esposito, John Bucyk, Fred Stanfield, and Derek Sanderson come close several times but are frustrated. Late in the game one can sense frustratioin from Sanderson, who is coming off winning the Calder Trophy but has yet to score on the season. Although he's probably the best Boston skater on this night, he takes a couple of late penalties that don't help. The best part is when the Bruins kill off a five-minute major penalty with the Leafs getting only one middling chance. Harry Sinden keeps rolling guys out, the checking is incredible, and none other than slot-machine Esposito rags the puck with some fancy stickhandling. I knew the final score but didn't know if they completed the kill, and I was kinda psyched when they did! No Ted Green or John McKenzie, but young Rick Smith makes an appearance and acquits himself quite well. Orr is his usual outstanding self, thankfully OK after going down in pain after blocking a shot. It's amusing to hear the commentator note that Orr "has let his hair grow over the summer", after No. 4 ditched the famous buzz cut! This game has been out there on YouTube.
