Secondary Production: The Wardrobe - October 5, 2017 Sam Holcroft’s play, The Wardrobe, was originally commissioned by the National Theatre in London as part of the 2014 Connections series which generates unique large cast scripts for young people in a myriad of theatrical styles. When asked about her inspiration for The Wardrobe, Holcroft mentions two interesting things: 1) young people have an extraordinary amount of energy which can be channeled into live theatre; and 2) she is curious how characters behave when confined in a small theatrical space. She speculated that the wardrobe would become a pressure cooker: where stakes are high and the characters act in extraordinary ways. In the world of the play, the wardrobe is created in Tudor times, and as the play progresses, the audience witnesses - over five centuries - the many characters who climb into this same wardrobe. Beyond the wardrobe, there are specific life-changing political and social circumstances, and confined within the wardrobe are the young people who hide, escape, explore, challenge, fight, or create their own imaginary worlds. This Secondary production marked a conscious artistic decision for Canggu Secondary School: choosing a script geared expressly to Senior High students with more challenging characters and themes than might be appropriate for middle school students.
