We believe that there are 4 worlds of understanding and existence - Atzilut, Beriah, Yetzira, and Asiyah. The symbolism of 4 worlds is seen across the world of Kabbalah and symbolism in Judaism and represents the evolution of man into a greater existence - that we can only truly reach perfection of the world when we go through all these 4 portals of understanding. This niggun is called 4 Bavot and it represents both the 4 worlds and the struggles and difficulties that come with growth. Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, who is the composer of this niggun, believed that the greatest service we do in this world is by refining ourselves as we go and that we always need to be connected to the world and our roots and to where we came from, no matter where we go - not to disconnect from the world, but to work to add layers to ourselves so we are both our past, our present and our future as we make the world a better place. I’m not Chabad - I have laughed this year at how many times I have been invited to perform for Chabad houses and events and how many of their tunes I have learned and loved - and as a musician have appreciated the complexity of music that isn’t straight 1-2-3-4. I also have always loved thinking and learning and understanding from a place of love, which is what Chabad radiates worldwide. Both the recording and the video were sponsored by a generous (private) donor, which in my mind is just so symbolic of how we all have gifts and the most important thing is to share them in a sensitive way.
