Hip Arthroscopy and Labrum Repair for a Labral Tear caused by FAI and Hip Impingement. Performed by Dr. Mufaddal Gombera at Texas Orthopedic Hospital and Fondren Orthopedic Group on April 28, 2020. Hip Impingement (also known as femoroacetabular impingement or #FAI) occurs from abnormal between the femoral head (ball) and acetabulum (socket) or the hip joint. This can cause hip pain, a labrum tear, and/or cartilage damage. The three types of #hipimpingement are: 1. Cam-type, where an aspherical femoral head tries to fit into a spherical socket 2. Pincer-type, with overcoverage of the socket (too much bone or too deep a socket) 3. Mixed-type, with both Cam and Pincer deformities. This is the most common type Over time, this repetitive “bumping” or impingement of the femoral head (ball) on the rim of the acetabulum (socket) leads to #cartilage damage and #labral tears. Some people are misdiagnosed with groin pulls or hip flexor strains, when really the hip pain may be caused by FAI. Once diagnosed, many people can avoid at risk motions for impingement, or compensate with a guided #physicaltherapy program. For those with persistent disabling pain, #hiparthroscopy is performed to remove the excess bone and repair the labrum tear (as seen above). For the labrum repair, we use suture anchors that are balls of suture we implant into the bone on the socket (acetabulum). These anchors have sutures that we pass through the labrum, and then tie those suture with arthroscopic knots. These sutures secure the labrum to its attachment on the bone (acetabulum), and holds it in place while the body repairs it as the hip recovers.
