Petrified Survivors is the world’s first global memorial dedicated to all victims and survivors of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). Designed by British artist Rebecca Hawkins, the sculpture honours survivors’ strength, courage, and demand for justice – bringing their experiences into the public consciousness with dignity and permanence. The memorial was co-created with over 20 organisations from across the world. Survivors led the process – selecting symbols, offering testimonies, and shaping every design detail. This film documents the memorial’s journey from early consultation and collaborative design through its making in the studio, its first showing to survivors, and its debut at the British Ambassador’s Residence in The Hague. It then follows the sculpture’s installation along Berlin’s Ernst-Friedrich Promenade. Petrified Survivors is only at the beginning of its journey. Our hope is for the memorial to travel globally, reaching the communities whose courage, stories, and symbols inspired its creation. Petrified Survivors Sculpture by Rebecca Hawkins.
