[Transcript] "The causes of hypertension are categorized under two broad categories. If the cause is uncertain, it’s called primary hypertension (formerly called “essential hypertension”). And if some specific mechanism of disease is determined, then the term secondary hypertension is used. This distinction is important because we can then decide on how to go about treating the hypertension. If there is an identifiable source that is affecting the blood pressure, most medical therapies that solely target blood pressure instead of the source will fail to improve the high blood pressure. For example, continuous oral contraceptive users (OCPs) can develop secondary hypertension because it is believed to induce the hormone that increases blood pressure. OCPs are a common secondary cause of hypertension. So simply discontinuing use can correct the problem, and they don’t need any extra medicine. But assume we did try to treat this secondary hypertension with antihypertensive medication!? So long as the source is still present, and the patient is on OCPs, the hypertension won’t subside. This principle is true of most secondary causes of hypertension."
