(2 Feb 2010) SHOTLIST POOL February 2, 2010 1. Wide of US Defence Secretary Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen sitting down at news conference 2. Cutaway of hearing 3. Gates and Mullen 4. Cutaway senators John McCain and Carl Levin 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Gates, US Defence Secretary: ++SOUNDBITE AUDIO PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY PRECEDING SHOT++ "Mr. Chairman, last week during his State of the Union address, the president announced he will work with Congress this year to repeal the law known as ''don''t ask, don''t tell''. He subsequently directed the Department of Defence to begin the preparations necessary for a repeal of the current law and policy. I fully support the president''s decision. The question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change but how we best prepare it." 6. Cutaway Gates and Mullen 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: "Speaking for myself and for myself only, it''s my personal belief that allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do. No matter how I look at this issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens." 8. Cutaway senators McCain and Levin 9. SOUNDBITE(English) John McCain, Republican Senator from Arizona: "This would be a substantial and controversial change to a policy that has been successful for two decades; it would also present yet another challenge to our military at a time of already tremendous stress and strain. Our men and women in uniform are fighting two wars, guarding the front lines against a global terrorist enemy." 10. Cutaway Mullen and Levin 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Levin, Democratic Senator from Michigan and Chairman of the Armed Services Committee: "I believe that ending the policy would improve our military''s capability and reflect our commitment to equal opportunity. I do not find the arguments that were used to justify ''don''t ask, don''t tell'' convincing when it took effect in 1993 and they are less so now." AP TELEVISION February 1, 2010 12. Set-up of David Hall, a former US Air Force sergeant, discharged in 2002 13. Various photos of Hall during his military service 14. SOUNDBITE (English) David Hall, Former US Air Force Sergeant: "My commander called me one day and said come see me. So I went in to see him and that''s when he said ''well unfortunately we are going to have to disenroll you from Air Force ROTC due to homosexual conduct.'' I was ranked number one in my class; I just had received my pilot slot a few months before that. So, definitely the type of person you want to get out of the military and not let serve. And that ended it; just like that based on what one person said ended my career, my dream of getting to fly planes." 15. Cutaway midshot of Hall 16. SOUNDBITE (English), David Hall, Former US Air Force Sergeant: 17. Cutaway of Hall STORYLINE: The US military''s top uniformed officer on Tuesday made an impassioned plea for allowing gays to serve openly in uniform, telling a Senate panel that it was a matter of integrity and that it is wrong to force people to "lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens." The comments by Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, sets the stage for the miltiary''s yearlong study into how the ban can repealed without causing a major upheaval to the force. "That ended it," said Hall, who now works for a gay rights advocacy group.
