In Minneapolis, the city’s first Black police chief has retired with his tenure marred by the murder of George Floyd, and the overpolicing of Black people. Medaria Arradondo served his last day as police chief of the Minneapolis Police Department on Jan. 15. The 54-year-old career law enforcement official spent 30 years with the department and began serving as police chief in 2017. Six out of the eight total police-involved killings in Minneapolis during Arradondo’s tenure as police chief have resulted in the killing of Black men, including the murder of George Floyd.
