Wilhelm Canaris began as a decorated naval officer and loyal supporter of Hitler’s regime. But by the late 1930s, the head of the Abwehr—Germany’s military intelligence—had become one of the most critical internal enemies of the Third Reich. Fluent in multiple languages, during the Second World War Canaris used his position to undermine Nazi plans from within, helping hundreds escape persecution and even warning the Allies of Operation Barbarossa. After witnessing Nazi atrocities in Poland, he grew deeply disillusioned. His quiet resistance turned into active subversion, passing secrets through intermediaries and sabotaging Hitler’s strategies abroad, including Spain’s refusal to join the Axis. In the wake of the failed July 20 plot to assassinate Hitler, Canaris was arrested and tortured. Though never proven directly involved, his links to the resistance sealed his fate. On April 9, 1945, just weeks before the war’s end, Wilhelm Canaris was stripped naked and hanged at Flossenbürg concentration camp—executed on Hitler’s personal orders. His final words, shared with a fellow prisoner, were: “I have a clear conscience. I only did my duty to my country when I tried to oppose the criminal folly of Hitler.” This is the story of a complex, controversial man who helped shape the secret war against the Nazis from within the Nazi regime itself.
