We seem to be currently witnessing something of a psychedelic renaissance. A recent book about psychedelics called the ‘Immortality Key’, written by Brian Muraresku, a non drug taking, practising Lawyer with a Jesuit background, and self described 'good catholic boy', has made its way onto the New York Times best seller list and has garnered a lot of attention even in the mainstream media. His book supports with a lot of detailed research, the controversial but at the same time very plausible idea that the Christian Eucharist has its roots in the ancient mystery traditions of Eleusius, Dionysus, Mithrais and the like, involving the ingestion of psychedelic plants and fungi. Major research institutions such as John Hopkins in the US and Imperial College here in the UK are now actively engaged in investigating psychedelics in a clinical and laboratory setting. The world’s most prominent public intellectual Jordan Peterson, who has long talked about psychedelics in a sympathetic way, seems to be exploring the subject further and taking his legions of followers with him. He even interviewed last year Carl Ruck who is one of the grandees of the psychedelic world, who told him, when Peterson pressed him on the matter of where his journey led him, that, “There is no God, you’re so stupid don’t you realize you are God”. Carl Ruck actually co-author a book about the Eleusinian mysteries with the great Albert Hofmann, a pioneering space cadet. Someone else going further down the rabbit hole is militant atheist Sam Harris, who in the Spring of 2020, took the late Terrence McKenna’s suggestion and ingested 5 grams of Psilocybin mushrooms. No he didn’t see God, but is now advocating the re-establishing of the Ancient Greek Eleusinian mysteries for the 21st century. That’s right, one of the Western world’s most prominent atheists is singing the praises of an ancient rite whose central purpose was the inducement of the state of union with God. Perhaps he should chat more with Muraresku, Ruck and Peterson and go further down the rabbit hole, after all he says he’s open to more investigations on the matter and has said he has long had a ‘nagging feeling there was something for me to learn here.’ Along the same lines, two more of the world’s most prominent atheist thinkers, i.e. new atheist Douglas Murray who has called himself a Christian Atheist and Slajov Zizek who calls himself an atheist Hegelian, and who by definition don’t believe in God; follow the ideas of two men i.e. Jesus H. Christ and the philosopher G.W.F Hegel, who both believed and stated pretty plainly that they were God. Indeed the world is full of irony! May the great symbolic white rabbit cross their paths, maybe they’ll follow. The resurgent interest in psychedelics also seems to be reflected in the social media and blogsphere. Popular podcasters such as Joe Rogan, Russell Brand and even the more specialized science and artificial intelligence podcast by MIT grad Lex Fridman, seem to be featuring psychedelic subjects with increasing regularity. We’ll be going pretty deep down the rabbit hole in the upcoming presentation of Psychedelics and Entheogenic substances, exploring them from many angles including historic/religious, experiential, neuroscientific and even political. We’ll be going into themes that perhaps don’t get so much attention even in psychedelic conferences like Breaking Convention here in the UK, and certainly not in the mainstream media or even in the podcast and social media-sphere. Most of all, we'll be asking why should certain substances produce religious experiences?
