It was a four-story building that was directly bombed, and without prior warning. As a result of this bombing, all members of my family were martyred: my father, my mother, my sisters, my brothers' wives, my brothers' sons, my brothers' daughters, the entire family.” 3. Various of destruction of building where Saddam’s family were killed 4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Saddam Al-Yazji, lost his family in Israeli airstrike: ”The sweet gathering. The family gathering is gone too. One would drink coffee, drink tea, eat. All of that does obviously not exist in our family because it's over. The family is gone. It's all been erased.” 5. Various of Saddam sitting on the ground near his brother grave and praying for him 6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Heba Al-Yazji, lost her family in Israeli airstrike: ”In previous Ramadans, we used to gather with our families around this time and enjoy their company. This Ramadan, life is empty; it's just me and my daughter all day long. I've lost all my family. Even if I still had a sister or brother to visit and see, there's no one. This Ramadan, the loneliness has become overwhelming.” 7. Various of Saddam lighting fire to cook food for their iftar 8. Various of Heba preparing food 9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Heba Al-Yazji, lost his family in Israeli airstrike: ”The war took everything from me. It left me with nothing. It took the dearest people to my heart: my mother, my father, my siblings, my uncle's family who are like a second family to me. Our homes, my children.” 10. Various of Heba preparing table and serving food, daughter watching 11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Heba Al- Yazji, lost her family in Israeli airstrike: ”Life has become difficult. We wish we had died with them rather than remain alone, because loneliness is not good. And Ramadan means (family) gathering. Thank God.” 12. Various of Saddam and his family breaking their fast near their destroyed house 13. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Saddam Al-Yazji, lost his family in Israeli airstrike: ”We should all be gathered together during Ramadan, all of us together. This time, I found only my wife, my daughter, and me at the table. I looked around, but there was nothing. Where was the big table? I didn’t find it. Where were the people around it? I mean, the table around which the family used to gather. My father used to gather us, my sisters and I, around this Ramadan table we all looked forward to. I swear, I couldn't find it.” 14. Various of Saddam and his family breaking their fast near their destroyed house STORYLINE: Surrounded by piles of concrete slabs, twisted metals, and debris, Saddam al-Yazji sits with his wife and their daughter on plastic chairs around a table outside their makeshift tent. The three are to break a dawn-to-sunset fast. This scene on an afternoon in Gaza City stands in stark contrast to typical family gatherings during the holy month of Ramadan in past years. Al-Yazji’s father used to bring his children and grandchildren together every for iftar – the fast-breaking meal. It brings families together for iftar or for the predawn meal - “suhoor” - in warm and lively gatherings. Al-Yazji said it was the third Ramadan without his wider family.
