The Government is changing the law so that the creation of sexually-explicit deepfakes without consent will be punishable by an unlimited fine and a criminal record. It is already illegal to share intimate images without consent, including deepfakes. This carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, where the image was shared for the purposes of sexual gratification, or with the intent to cause alarm, distress, or humiliation to the victim.
