On this day, a bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court—comprising Justice Suryakant Sharma, Justice S.S. Saron, and Justice Avneesh Jhingan—granted a free hand to the Haryana Police and security forces, overruling the principles of the rule of law. As a result, security personnel opened fire at point-blank range, killing hundreds of innocent devotees who had gathered in prayer for the well-being of their spiritual master, Saint Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan, the present head of Dera Sacha Sauda. He had just been convicted in what many believe to be a fabricated case by the CBI Special Court presided over by Judge Jagdeep Singh Lohan. In the aftermath, Justice Suryakant Sharma went so far as to describe the massacre as a “war-like situation.” Shockingly, the deceased were branded as anti-nationals instead of being recognized as victims of state brutality. Rather than prosecuting those responsible, the Government of India rewarded Justice Suryakant with promotions, eventually elevating him to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), despite its mandate, remained silent and took no action regarding this tragic episode.
