In an exciting afternoon of research and discovery that showcased Michigan’s strength as a worldwide leader in research, members of the University community gathered October 5, 2023, at the North Campus Research Complex to hear about both the past and promise of scientific inquiry at the inaugural “Great Minds, Greater Discoveries” Dean’s Lecture. To kick off the festivities in Part 1, Executive Vice Dean for Research in the Medical School and Chief Scientific Officer for Michigan Medicine Steven L. Kunkel gave an overview of “Great Minds, Greater Discoveries” — the Michigan Medicine strategic research plan. Then, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Medical School Dean Marshall S. Runge, M.D., Ph.D., delivered opening remarks before U-M President Santa J. Ono, Ph.D., welcomed Steve Holland, M.D., to the podium. Dr. Holland, director of the Division of Intramural Research, and chief of the Immunopathogenesis Section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was the inaugural Dean’s Lecturer and discussed “Anticytokine Autoantibodies: Hiding in Plain Sight.” His talk was the centerpiece of a day that focused on the topic of inflammation.
