Labor and Resistance • Figures like Manbok embody the wandering laborer’s hardship. • At Cheonbosan Silver Mine, Joseon laborers—1/3 of the workforce—endured brutal exploitation. • Their revolt, though not resolving daily struggles, marked a milestone of collective resistance and solidarity with other ethnic groups. Adaptation and Cultural Shifts • Unlike farmers who resisted Qing assimilation, migrant laborers like Manbok adopted local clothing and language for survival. • This indicates differentiated strategies of adaptation among Joseon settlers. Confrontation with Japan • By the early 20th century, Japanese intrusion in Gando created internal divisions. • While some advocated compromise, leaders like Jang Seok-jun stressed resistance and loyalty to Chinese jurisdiction rather than Japanese control. • This reflects the gradual shift from homeland-centered nationalism to a localized collective identity rooted in Gando. Collective Memory and Identity • Settlers’ experiences—resisting Qing policies, enduring labor exploitation, and opposing Japan—formed a shared ethnic memory unique to Joseonjok. • This memory structured the community into a resilient group with its own distinctive identity separate from both Korea and China.
