Band 4 assistant role for patients with non complex dysphagia

This project focused on timely reviews and appropriate longer term management for clients who have been undergoing swallow therapy. Due to current demands, the Speech and Language Team were struggling to provide a quality service to clients who were ready to make the transition between modified and normal diet. We wanted to support higher risk patients with acute and complex needs whilst being very aware that the ongoing need for support for our chronic clients is hugely important in regard to reduction of low mood, self-esteem, isolation and lack of social integration. The plan was to support the timely reintroduction of more normal food and fluid consistencies. As a result, we introduced a training programme for non-registered Band 4 Speech and Language Therapy Associate Practitioners to deliver basic swallow therapy plans and complete non-complex swallow reviews. This has been a huge benefit to patients and the reputation of our service. It has also strengthened our team resilience and skill mix and should prove attractive in future recruitment.
