Christine Isimbi, a young professional in Rwanda's Ministry of Finance, reflects on how her participation in the YELP fellowship program has reshaped her approach to leadership and effecting change within government systems. She discusses the ongoing challenges of bureaucracy, slow decision-making, resistance to innovation, and varying levels of motivation among colleagues, even in a relatively progressive setting where young leaders are empowered. Christine highlights the importance of patience, staying anchored to one's core purpose or "why," building supportive coalitions, and drawing renewal from a community of like-minded fellows who face similar obstacles across sectors and countries. She also describes navigating both big-P politics at the national level and small-p politics at the interpersonal level to gain buy-in, encourage collaboration, and ultimately speed up meaningful impact while honoring necessary institutional safeguards.
