Full review and standardized testing of the HO scale "rebuilt" F40PH-2D made by Rapido Trains Inc. Locomotive weight: 473 grams / 16.70 oz Drawbar Pull: 95 grams / 3.35 oz Drawbar Push: 95 grams / 3.35 oz This model was announced in January 2016 and delivered in May 2017 with one undecorated version, 10 road numbers and one unnumbered version all in the "renaissance" paint scheme, and an addition "$10 bill" fantasy paint scheme was offered featuring the now retired 6403 road number that appears on the Canadian $10 bill. The models are available in DC/Silent or DC/DCC with ESU Loksound. MSRP: DC/Silent - $250.00 DC/DCC/ESU Loksound - $350.00 Detail - Very good. All of the unique VIA rail specific details and very accurate to the prototype. Hand brake chain hanging off the rear truck, full cab interior and lot's of underbody detail for the discerning modeller who runs trains upside down. I found the way the bug deflector was attached was very non-prototypical and toy like but this was likely a difficult item to attach and their engineers did their best. Upon very close inspection the paint line from the green to grey also was a little rough on my models which is unusual for Rapido. 9.0/10 Operation/Drive train - Very very slow crawl speed, nice smooth, quiet operation 9.5/10 Weight - Weighing in at 473 grams / 16.77 oz and being a shorter 4 axle locomotive this is a very decent wieght. Compared to other 4 axle locomotives on the market it can out-pull an Athearn Genesis CN Geep by 40 grams which is very substantial and can pull 20 grams more than the previous run F40PH-2D which I am assuming was an improvement in the decoders software. 9/10 Sound - Great sounding recordings in the ESU decoder. Prime mover is nice and throaty and the volume levels are set at a very acceptable level right out of the box. The HEP generator is definitely my favorite recording I think it sounds amazing. 9/10 Lighting - Step lighting. A strobe light. Number boards and head/ditch lights are all at a very realistic brightness and no light bleed. Extra awesome that each lighting feature has it's own function 9.5/10 OVERALL SCORE: 9.2 / 10 Pretty much perfect. I haven't tested the reliability yet but my first run F40PH-2D performed well despite others having major problems with the motors. Apparently they made changes to improve on the reliability with these models and they will be better. I think I can say confidently that there will never be a better model of a VIA Rail F40PH-2D rebuild made after this.
