Did you know that Rugby School UK was one of the first schools in the world to formally codify the game of cricket - with the earliest written rules recorded in 1749? That said... The rules recorded by Rugby School's pupils were not the refined, carefully measured rules we know today. Early schoolboy matches were sprawling, often chaotic, and played on bumpy uneven pitches. By the early 1800s cricket was deeply embedded in school life. And Rugby School's most famous Headmaster was a passionate fan. He believed team sports like cricket were vital for developing character, leadership, and a sense of fair play. And it is this belief in "whole person" education that now underpins everything we do at Rugby School Japan. It is why we weave out-of-the-classroom activities like sport, art, drama, debate, enterprise, social responsibility and so on into our weekly timetable. It is also why we were thrilled to welcome pupils from our sister school, Phoenix House International School, The British School in Tokyo, Malvern College Tokyo, and The Montessori School of Tokyo to join us for a fun, friendly cricket tournament earlier this month. This was a wonderful morning full of laughter, teamwork, and spirited competition - and we cannot wait to welcome our friends back to campus again soon.
