Master Lighting for Drama with '24' Cinematographer Rodney Charters ASC - Episode 6

Welcome to the final episode of our lighting tutorial series with master cinematographer Rodney Charters ASC. Working with the legendary gaffer John ‘Biggles’ Higgins as lighting consultant and Elena Armellini as gaffer he moves the short film’s story to its concluding homecoming scene. For Charters realistic natural lighting is critical to his cinematography. He places lights so the scene feels believable and not artificially lit. He also sees the interplay between light and actors as essential, so he often tells talent how they can position themselves in the light to look better. In this final scene he expertly uses a selection of lights to seamlessly achieve a natural look. A Nanlux Evoke 2400B LED spotlight is used to cast onto a 8’×8’ Griffolyn fabric outside creating soft light illuminating the actor as he enters the room. Charters and Higgins also used Nanlite PavoSlim 120C and PavoSlim 240C LED panels simulating the light coming in from some imaginary windows out of frame on either side of the room. The PavoSlim series lights were perfectly suited to the task as they offer precise shaping, diffusion, softening and color adjustment. To enhance the atmosphere a PavoTube II 30XR is positioned above the window. Additionally, two PavoBulb 10Cs are used as practicals above the dining table to mimic the light from pendant lamps. Lastly a NANLITE Forza 60C spotlight with a Projection Attachment, plus another PavoSlim 120C provide additional light on the characters. The scene also utilizes natural light as fill light with help from some of the light fixtures covered with diffusion to create a matching soft natural daylight. Each light fixture plays an important role and at the same time is simple and convenient to control.
