I recently was asked to cull a herd or brumbies on a cattle property where I do some pest control. I have found shooting horses to be a bit of a controversial topic, even amongst the hunting community some people get upset by killing horses, which makes no sense to me. In a lot of countries horse meat is eaten regularly, I have european friends who love it, but in Australia it is uncommon, and I believe in the US even illegal in some states. I don't kill anything without good reason, either to eat or because they are harming someone's livelihood. And in this instance they tick both boxes, so I have no problem with shooting them. On this property there has been a bushfire through most of it, and food is scarce for the existing stock, so the owner doesn't want to be feeding horses at great expense for no gain. Plus, they carry parasites and diseases which can also be passed to cattle, so there are legitimate reasons for getting rid of them.
