Reactive Schnauzer & Impulsive Frenchie Start Public Access Work

Mad Madi and her new bestie, Nilla, have started their Public Access training! A little over a week ago it would have been impossible to walk these two ANYWHERE without Madi barking at EVERYTHING, and Nilla completely tuning out her person! We’ve been working hard on conditioning their mindsets to defer to their person, and look to us for guidance. Tuning out the world and listening to their humans is critical in overcoming their insecurities and impulsiveness. This has involved a comprehensive program based in PERMISSION ONLY ACTIVITY, where every step is managed and dictated by me. This slows down their issues with overwhelm and processing, creating a lot more self awareness! We headed to Lowes, to continue solidifying both dogs’ obedience around unfamiliar stimuli. This place is loaded with things a dog has never seen! And for Madi, unfamiliar “anything” can have her flip to an unhealthy space of reactivity! Working around a ton of distraction like this desensitizes both pups to the unfamiliar, and helps Madi defer to ME when confronted with triggers that concern her. Having a Leader to guide them through the experience (rather than coddle or avoid), while also holding them accountable for any irrationality or lack of focus, is key. They then learn to look to their humans instead of being overly concerned about everything else around us. Awesome job cutie-patooties!
