How BIG is the universe? Sounds like a simple enough question, but in reality, there are four different ways to answer it, and they're arguably all correct! Today I chat with Future of Humanity Institute philosopher Toby Ord about his recent paper "The Edges of the Universe". We explore the ways we calculate these different universe boundaries; from the ever-shrinking "affectable" to the unfathomably giant "ultimately observable" universe; as well as the ethical implications of space exploration and the far future. Toby's research tries to answer the biggest picture questions facing humanity; from aliens to utilitarian ethics and the potential loss if we were to go extinct. He recently wrote an amazing book called "The Precipice", which discusses these cosmological dilemmas in detail, so if this is the kind of stuff that tickles your grey matter I highly recommend you check it out: https://theprecipice.com/ Further reading: The Edges of Our Universe: https://arxiv.org/abs/2104.01191 Dissolving the Fermi Paradox: https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.02404 Astronomical Waste: https://www.nickbostrom.com/astronomi... #Longtermism #Cosmology #ThePrecipice Timestamps: 00:00:00 - Intro 00:01:02 - The size of currently observable universe 00:09:41 - The red-shifting problem 00:15:50 - The affectable universe 00:25:57 - The eventually observable universe 00:31:21 - The ultimately observable universe 00:32:33 - Astronomical Waste 00:39:40 - Why are these questions morally important? 00:46:54 - Aliens and the Fermi paradox 00:56:06 - Extinction risks, utopian and dystopian futures 01:06:35 - Career advice on longtermism ---- Liv Boeree's channel is a collection of short films and discussions exploring the fringes of science, philosophy and futurism.
