Redmond O'Hanlon travels to Egypt and travels by camel through the Nubian desert, in the footsteps of the Dutch explorer Alexandrine (Alexine) Tinne (1835-1869). The wealthy, aristocratic Alexine Tinne decides to leave her stately home in The Hague in the second half of the 19th century and to travel to Egypt, where she will spend eighteen days in the Nubian desert. She takes her mother Henriette, sister Addie, hundreds of servants and carriers on a voyage of discovery, and a caravan of 102 camels, packed with suitcases full of expensive dresses, bedsteads, crystal carafes, paintings and crockery. O'Hanlon is staying in Cairo in the newly built version of the Shepheard Hotel, where the Tinnes stayed before they left for desert. There were also many explorers at the time, looking for the origins of the Nile. O'Hanlon stays in a luxury suite and then stays in Mena House, a five-star hotel in the desert with a view on the pyramids. He sails across the Nile and travels by camel through the desert with the Dutch guide Arita Baaijens, for whom Alexine Tinne is an example. He reaches the Nile and continues by boat. He talks about the slave trade in Khartoum and about the 12-year-old slave, whom Henriette Tinne offered as a gift to the wife of the Turkish governor.
