Prey Lang is one of the largest remaining lowland evergreen forests in mainland Southeast Asia, spanning over 430,000 hectares across the northern plains of Cambodia. It is a critical biodiversity hotspot and home to numerous endangered species, including the Indochinese tiger, Asian elephant, and Siamese crocodile. The name "Prey Lang" translates to "Our Forest" in the local Khmer language, underscoring its significance to the indigenous communities who rely on it for their livelihoods, traditional medicines, and cultural practices. These communities have been the primary stewards of Prey Lang for generations, utilizing sustainable harvesting techniques and protecting it from encroachment. However, Prey Lang has faced significant threats in recent years, primarily from illegal logging, land concessions, and agricultural expansion. Rampant deforestation not only poses a grave danger to the region's biodiversity but also contributes to climate change and disrupts the lives of indigenous peoples who depend on the forest for their survival. In response to these threats, local communities, environmental activists, and NGOs have united to form the Prey Lang Community Network (PLCN). This grassroots movement aims to monitor and protect the forest, raise awareness about its importance, and advocate for its conservation. The PLCN conducts patrols, engages in reforestation efforts, and works to pressure the Cambodian government to enforce environmental laws and respect indigenous land rights. Despite these efforts, challenges persist, including limited resources, corruption, and ongoing pressure from industries seeking to exploit the forest's resources. The struggle to preserve Prey Lang reflects broader issues of environmental conservation, indigenous rights, and sustainable development in Cambodia and beyond. However, through continued advocacy and collaboration, there remains hope that Prey Lang can be safeguarded for future generations..
