In Part 1 of Preventing Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) rupture, we look at the first two signs that a dogs CCL is in danger of rupturing. Both in regards to inflammation. When I graduated from vet school in 1992, a dog would tear a cruciate ligament secondary to a trauma. CCL rupture repair is now 50-85% of all orthopedic surgeries performed each year, and the cause is degeneration of the ligament, secondary to inflammation. If we can decrease or eliminate the inflammation, we can decrease the chance of each dog having this injury and requiring surgery. In this short video we discuss how to tell if there is inflammation in the joint by palpating for effusion and by looking at radiographs. We compare normal, mild, moderate, and severe changes in the knee going step by step so everyone will know what to look for. We discuss how to feel the knee for effusion, and we have a special test that Dr. Laurie designed… Watch the video to learn more.
