Cervical cancer is one of the most devastating diseases for women worldwide, yet it is largely preventable with the HPV vaccine. In Kenya, the Ministry of Health introduced the vaccine in 2019, aiming to protect girls aged 10 to 14 from this deadly disease. However, misconceptions, low awareness, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have slowed the progress, especially in areas like Garissa County. In this inspiring story, we see how community leaders, like Mzee Mohammed, have become champions in advocating for the HPV vaccine. Despite the challenges posed by cultural beliefs and misinformation, Mzee Mohammed, along with partners like UNICEF, the Center for Behavior Change and Communication (CBCC), and the Ministry of Health, are working together to spread awareness and encourage parents to protect their daughters. Watch attached video to get highlights of the ongoing efforts, including community outreach sessions, school visits, and collaboration with local leaders to ensure that the HPV vaccine reaches every girl.
