In November and December, 2019, I visited Palestine to teach and perform at music schools in Shefa-'Amr, Nablus, Jenin, Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Deir Ghassane and Qalandia. While there, I performed with oudist Iyad Staiti, and percussionist Ibrahim Froukh. For fun, I videotaped them playing this lovely work by Turkish composer Goksel Baktagir. I asked them to leave silences so that I could improvise over their performance. Since returning to the US, I have been performing with this video as it is displayed on the MoyerCam, giving my audiences the opportunity to hear these virtuoso musicians and to hear of these incredible people and their efforts to teach music to Palestinian children, especially those in marginalized areas.
