The Marine Protected Aerea of Capo Milazzo, Messina district, has been instituted in 2019. It is located on the norther coast of Sicily, the so called “Penisola Mamertina”, a rocky promontory that closes the Gulf of Milazzo on the west side. The newborn reserve includes a rich biodiversity, both marine and terrestrial and offers some unforgettable seascapes over the northern coast of Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. The Venus pool (“Laghetto di Venere” or “Piscina di Venere”) is a wonderful little sea lake located at the end of the peninsula where the cliff goes down to water level. It is the main attraction of the Naturalistic trail that crosses the reserve. The pool, with its crystal and warm water, is a spectacular site, a perfect example of the beauties created by Nature in Sicily. A thin rocky branch divides the pool and its emerald waters from the open blue sea, preserving the rich underwater fauna and flora from the storms. This is a place, I am sure, you won’t forget. But the Marine Protected aerea is not only the Venus Pool. The trail that crosses the reserve starts from the Belvedere Square of Capo Milazzo. From there all the spectacularity of the site will be in your eyes, the S. Antonio Bay, the town of Milazzo and its harbor, the Aeolian Islands and in a clear day southwards even the Etna volcano. The trail at the beginning passes and Indian Fig tree field and then a centuries-old olive grove. A lighthouse towers over the highest point. Then a stair goes down to the pool in a breathtaking mediterranean vegetation. Coming back from the pool, a deviation brings to the west side till the Old tower and the ruins of the fishermen settlement. The sea is transparent and the colors of the seabed are beautiful. Perfect for a swim, especially in summer. All the trail is clearly marked so the hike is easy. Overall the trail is almost two kilometers. To reach the starting point, you have to cross the historical town of Milazzo, to go past of the magnificent castle and continue till the end of district road SP 72 that stops in Belvedere square. From here, if you want, you can reach also the Sanctuary of Saint Antonio da Padova, built on the place where He landed in 1221 after a wreck. I suggest you to overnight in Milazzo because the town offers many other attraction (the Castle is not to be missed). There is plenty of accommodations, restaurants, bars, pizzeria and whatever you may need for your stay. This is an entirely GoPro Hero 7 film, edited with i-Movie. The track “Within the Swirls“ is by E. Grenga and D. Stevens and is available on Audio Hero. Maps are by Esri and Relive app coupled with a Suunto Traverse watch. More information?
