In the UK, over 500,000 people are being treated by the NHS for inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, which mainly refers to Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In this video, we follow our Head of Performance and Impact, Louise Barker, as she takes us through her Crohn’s disease journey. Louise’s Crohn’s disease symptoms began in August 2019 when she experienced severe pain in her bowel. After six surgeries, and a colostomy bag, Louise was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at the start of 2021. Crohn’s is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks itself. There is currently no cure for any inflammatory bowel disease, but biological medications, such as infliximab, can be used as a treatment for those with Crohn’s and colitis to relieve flare-up symptoms. Infliximab’s mechanism of action for Crohn’s disease involves targeting immune cells within the affected colon area. It’s incredibly difficult to deliver a biologic medicine to the digestive tract. That’s why, currently, infliximab is administered through IV infusion or an injection in hospital, which is time-consuming, distressing and can lead to immunosuppression. We’re hoping to change this. We’ve worked on a project with Intract Pharma, SGS Quay Pharma, and Pharmidex to contain infliximab in a capsule so that those with IBD, like Louise, can take a targeted, tablet treatment in the comfort of their own home with fewer adverse side effects.
