You may not know much about Japanese whisky and if you don't Hibiki Japanese Harmony would be a great place to start. While there is no age statement and it is a blended whisky (containing grain whiskies), this whisky does not taste like any blend I have ever had. It tastes like a single malt. It is balanced and does not exhibit any of the graininess that is typical of cheap Scotch blends. The Japanese have been making whisky for a long time. Maybe not as long as the Scottish, but back to 1923. ABV 43% No Age Statement 60% Grain whiskies (Chita Distillery) 40% Malt whiskies (Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries) Five different casks used in aging the component whiskies including American white oak, sherry casks and Mizunara (Japanese) oak. Nose Restrained, very subtle floral notes, sweetness, sherry, sandalwood and bergamot. Palate Orange slices, orange rinds, blood oranges, raspberries, sandalwood, bergamot, citrus notes like apricot and some pomegranate. Finish Malty, milk chocolate but with powerful sherry and red fruit notes. General Impressions In a blind tasting, if someone said they were serving me a single malt I would not disagree. This does not taste like a blend. Balanced, no bite, bitterness or anything that is offensive. It tastes like a Speysider. The only negative is the price. In Canada or the UK it is pretty much $100CDN. Americans can get it for less. Another negative, but I would down play it is the minimal complexity. Would like more intricate flavors for the price, but up to $100 I would still buy it. Cheers!
