(17 Oct 1995) English/Nat The leader of the rebel Bosnian Serbs has played down the sacking of four top generals in the Bosnian Serb army. Analysts say Karadzic fired the generals in an apparent attempt to heal rifts in the Serb leadership over battlefield losses and Bosnian Serb participation in peacemaking. But the Bosnian Serb leader told reporters he let the generals go to make way for the younger generation. Delegates gathered at the Bosnian Serb parliament in Banja Luka witnessed the dismissal of the four top generals on Monday. Ongoing fighting in north-west Bosnia, in spite of the recent ceasefire agreement, has led to unexpectedly high losses for Radovan Karadzic's Bosnian Serb forces. And combined with a growing refugee crisis sparked by the defeats, the deteriorating situation demanded that blame be apportioned. Those fired included Deputy Serb commander General Milan Gvero and military intelligence chief General Zdravko Tolimir. Also to go was Prime Minister Dusan Kozic, who resigned. Karadzic, however, was keen to play down the changes. SOUNDBITE: "We need some refreshments, some young people and a new energy. And they are not displaced because of certain particular reasons, except for we need some refreshment. And as far as the prime minister, he wanted somebody from his area to be prime minister. Otherwise the government's efforts and tasks have been judged positively. (Journalist's question) The peace process is depending on the Muslim-Croat federation. They have to stop fighting and Croatia has to get out of this territory otherwise Croatia is risking to get sanctioned and Croatia is risking to ruin the peace initiative of the American president." SUPER CAPTION: Radovan Karadzic, Bosnian Serb leader But the Bosnian Serbs, who dominated most of Bosnia's three-and-a-half year old war, have been seriously unsettled by the recent losses - a fact underlined by the scale of this purge of the military leadership.
