The brilliant Paul Bracq designed some of the most iconic Mercedes-Benz models ever produced, including the sporty two-seater ‘Pagoda’ and his magnum opus, the 600. Bracq’s intention was for the 600 to be simple and elegant, featuring graceful lines and a luxuriously appointed interior. Wisely, the design changed only modestly throughout its 18-year reign—the longest-running of any Mercedes-Benz model. The Grosser’s effortless external shape belies its mechanical complexity. The car’s M100 engine is a 6.3-litre powerplant with multi-port Bosch fuel injection, producing 247 horsepower. This was Mercedes-Benz’s first production V-8 and was used exclusively in the 600 until 1968. The car was legendary for introducing an extremely complex hydraulic system that powered the divider window, front and rear seats, passenger windows, sunroof (or Landaulet top), boot lid—and even the fuel-filler flap. The 600 was known for its adjustable pneumatic self-leveling suspension, providing a supremely comfortable quality of ride and excellent handling over any road surface. #w100 #mercedes600 #grosser #oldbenz source: jorisclerc.com
