During flight training in the US, we CFI's always teach people what a spin is and how to recover from it. The problem is, it's easier said than done. A lot of people don't get to experience a spin until CFI training or even worse after inadvertently putting themselves into a spin. This is why I think it's never a bad thing to try spins before they are required by CFI training. Regardless, the recovery technique we've all been taught from the beginning is the one that absolutely works.
