The Kaua'i Forest Bird Recovery Project is currently working to implement mosquito control on Kaua’i to address the imminent extinction of two endemic Honeycreepers, ‘akikiki and 'akeke’e. We are using two different methods, one is Bt or dunk which we have been applying to puddles and standing water in the Alakai wilderness since 2016, and we will now be applying aerially as well. The second one is the Incompatible Insect Technique which takes advantage of the fact that mosquitoes with different, incompatible strains of Wolbachia can’t produce offspring. This approach is in partnership with the state-wide Birds, Not Mosquito partnership (DOFAW, DLNR, DOH, USFWS, USGS, UH, NPS and other non-for profit conservation organizations). The partnership is proposing to introduce non-biting male mosquitoes (Southern house mosquito) with a different Wolbachia strains from wild females to suppress mosquito populations.
