Royal forest inspires forest retreat design | Change of Plans Epping Forest UK

In this episode of Resi Renos, we're in a royal forest. We're welcomed by the loveliest couple, Fatima and Sven, as they talk us through their nature-focused renovation, their reasons for moving from the bustle of London to just by Epping Forest, and their hopes of instilling a deep sense of appreciation for nature in their twin boys, Thor and Odin. The house that stood in the same space before was outdated and had a rotten deck. Now, the house is a thoughtfully designed family home that pays homage to its natural surroundings - a real wood kitchen, a mango wood table, granite worktops and more importantly, a 7-metre-wide glazing that frames their incredible backyard view. The connection to site was paramount for the space that Sven and Fatima envisioned when they approached Resi to design their extension. Framing specific views with window and door openings is always a desirable aspect of any project, but achieving this with minimal obstructions from glazing frames and supporting structure was key on this project where the landscape offered such a jaw-dropping backdrop to life in the family home. By using low profile sliding casements and working with RESI’s technical design team to conceal and neatly detail the structure forming this large opening, the splendour of the Epping Forest is framed in harmony with their life raising their twin sons. The final architectural flourish to nurture these views out come from the chamfered fins either side of the raised catwalk beyond the doors, offering even further views afield into the blossoming natural surroundings.
