Matisse Underglaze Applique

Using Matisse as our inspiration, we will cut sheets of underglazes newsprint to applique designs onto a slab of clay. The term applique is derived from the French word appliquer which means to join or attach. Using Matisse as our inspiration we will cut sheets of underglazed newsprint and layer them into colorful designs on a slab of clay. Once the slab is appliqued with underglazed cutouts it can be used to create three-dimensional clay forms. Supplies: • Clay: AMACO White Art Clay No.25, 50-lb • Slip: AMACO No.1 Porcelain Slip, 1 Gallon • Underglaze: Amaco Velvet Underglazes • Glaze: Amaco Clear Transparent glaze, F-10 or LG-10. • Optional: Amaco Teacher's Palette Light Translucent glazes • Newsprint • Firm paper plates • Plastic Wrap • Fettling Knife • Needle tool or skewer • Scissors • Scraper or plastic card • Paintbrushes • Wooden roller or brayer Category/Audience/Grade Level: • Adaptable for grade levels, 6‐12 • Curriculum‐based, covers Core Curriculum aspects (math, reading, history) Time needed in a classroom: • 90 minutes – 2 hours, depending on options available.
