Geneva 19.03.2026 Digital innovation and global cooperation are emerging as key drivers of inclusive development. This was the central message at a high-level side event held today during the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council at the United Nations Office at Geneva. Organized by the Global Institute for Water, Environment and Health, the event focused on how South–South cooperation and digital technologies can advance the right to development worldwide. Experts at the forum emphasized that access to digital technologies — including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital public infrastructure — is becoming essential for achieving human rights and sustainable growth. Speakers highlighted that digital innovation can significantly expand access to healthcare, education, and financial services, particularly in developing countries. India’s large-scale digital systems in health and finance were presented as a successful model of inclusion, demonstrating how technology can be scaled to reach millions efficiently. Participants noted that digital transformation could contribute to achieving up to 70 percent of the Sustainable Development Goals, while also supporting global climate action. A major focus of the discussion was the importance of South–South cooperation, encouraging countries across the Global South to share knowledge, technology, and development strategies. The panel also proposed concrete solutions, including the creation of a global fund for digital transformation, enhanced debt relief measures, and stronger UN guidelines for the ethical use of digital technologies. Civil society, they stressed, will play a critical role in promoting digital literacy and accountability, ensuring that innovation benefits all communities. The message from Geneva was clear: Harnessing digital innovation — responsibly and collaboratively — could accelerate human rights, economic inclusion, and sustainable development on a global scale.
