Research Heavy Metals in Breast Implant Capsules and Breast Tissue: Findings From the ASERF Systemic Symptoms in Women-Biospecimen Analysis Study: Part 2 Authors: Roger Wixtrom, PhD; Caroline Glicksman, MD, MSJ; Marshall Kadin, MD; Marisa Lawrence, MD; Melinda Haws, MD; Sarah Ferenz, BA; James Sung, MD, FCAP; and Patricia McGuire, MD Commentary by: Anand K. Deva, MD Commentary by: Mark R. Magnusson, MBBS, FRACS New BII research continues in this Original Article by Dr. Roger Wixtrom and colleagues who analyzed the metal content in capsules surrounding saline and silicone breast implants. Though smoking, gluten free diets, dietary supplements, and tattoos were all identified as statistically significant sources of arsenic and zinc in one cohort, the risk of heavy metal toxicity should not be used as an indication for total capsulectomy in patients who opt for breast implant removal. A Commentary by Dr. Anand Deva indicates there is a biological driver to BII linked to inflammation that precipitates capsular contracture and BIA-ALCL that could potentially generate systemic illness. A second Commentary by Dr. Mark Magnusson elucidates the reality that these elements only exist in trace quantities in breast implants relative to acceptable daily exposure levels which may lead to misrepresentation. He concludes this is a landmark paper and that while this information may lend support to patient advocates and help women make treatment decisions, it’s unlikely to sway the patient activist.
