Each card is approx 17 x 12.6cm and is a mixture of pink cardboard, glue, paint, photo prints, receipts, paper, stickers, ink. I recently discovered Jean Michel Basquiat and his work and life has inspired me greatly. His style and approach to his creations filled me with an even greater desire to pursue art and be more bold in my own creativity. These cards are in his honour. They’re inspired by his anti-product cards which he sold on the streets for $1 in the 80’s. “Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” A quote by Picasso and something I have taken from this whole discovery of their work. Jean Michel Basquiat would look at old famous paintings he liked, “steal” them - and make them his own. He also famously sold one of his postcards to Andy Warhol. Their partnership and their work lead me to this pop art approach to these cards. For the Ghost Cards I took childhood memories, ghosts from the past, printed them out and cut them up. Using bar codes to make them like products - the opposite of JMB’s anti product approach. I tried to make it obvious which art isn’t mine and respectfully deface the imagery creating a haunting, comedic, and hopefully artistic set of cards. All credit to original artists from Square, Capcom, and other brilliant creatives. Mixing my own work - mini sketches and ghostly eyes with pop art imagery and paint.
