Asinou Church (also spelt 'Assinou') is a tiny, 12th century shrine to the Virgin Mary, located in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to frescoes that are strikingly beautiful and considered to be some of the greatest examples of mural painting in Cyprus. There are more than 100 paintings, most of them dating from the 12th–14th century. Some sources also attribute these to the 17th century. The paintings are based on the life of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints, and depict classic themes such as the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. The church is located about 5 kilometers away from Nikitari on the Nicosia-Troodos road, and about 20 kilometers north to the village of Kakopetria. The route is winding and scenic, scented with the pine that dots the mountainsides. The site of the church is peaceful and quite rural; making it a great place to unwind, especially if you are careworn and tired of the bustle of the cities. The structure of the church is simple and unassuming with a rectangular base and a vaulted dome. Also known as the Church of Panaghia Phorviotissa, it was built using mud and mortar and was reconstructed several times following its collapse. Detailed Information: Located on the east bank of a stream, 3km from the mountainous village of Nikitari, Panagia Asinou Church is a small church dedicated to the Virgin of ‘Phorbia’. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains some of the finest Byzantine wall paintings on the island, dating from the 12th to the 17th century. The church used to be a monastery church that was built in 1099 with the donation of Magistros Nikephoros Ischyrios, who subsequently became a monk with the name Nikolaos. It functioned until the end of the 18th century, when it was abandoned. The church consists of two parts - the vaulted single-aisled nave and the narthex - which is a later addition belonging to the second half of the 12th century. The 12th century steep-pitched timber roof, covered with flat tiles, sheltered the church. Today, there are no traces of the rest of the monastic buildings. The murals inside the church date from the 12th century to the 17th century and reflect the art of Constantinople, which is thought to be the artist's birthplace. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Equipment I Use ►Camera: https://amzn.to/49b7RTf ►Gimbal Stabilizer: https://amzn.to/45QX25N ►Microphone: https://amzn.to/3sl7IMw ►Action Cam: https://amzn.to/3QyEhQa ►Extension Rod: https://amzn.to/3MlxAOY ►Memory Card https://amzn.to/3QOTZHj ►Drone: https://amzn.to/3SffEJL ►Laptop: https://amzn.to/3FGYP2C ►External Hard Drive: https://amzn.to/40kQQ51 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- English title: Panagia Asinou Church in Troodos Mountains | Unesco World Heritage | Trip to Larnaka, Cyprus 2021 #troodos #panagia #cyprus #larnaka #unescoworldheritage #unescoworldheritagesite #unescoworldheritagesites
