A look at Luke will be a study of Jesus through the eyes of the gentile disciple Luke and his intention to explain to Theopolis, a fellow gentile, the life of Jesus from birth to resurrection. We won’t begin with the birth, we will start with John, the forerunner, and his teaching and preparation for Jesus’s ministry. Writer: Luke – physician who was not Jewish, he was a gentile – Greek. Col. 4:14 Date: Aprox. A.D. 60 Purpose: Luke 1:1 – 4 Portrayal of Jesus: Son of Man VS 1: Political Leadership – a good historian marks the time, this isn’t fiction. Cruelty, brutality, and corruption were the political climate of the day. VS 2: Religious Leadership – this is the environment that Jesus came into – Political power hungry religious leaders who were more concerned with political power than serving God. John – The Forerunner Who Introduced Jesus See: Luke 1:75 – 79 Zacharias’ Prophecy of John Lk. 1 80 So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel. VS 3: This verse must be understood from the Judean point of view. A word study is needed with some grammatical clarification… 1. Repentance – implies a change of mind and goes much deeper into the heart, attitude, interest, and direction of one’s being. 2. “for” is a proposition in English and the Greek language in this verse not used to show purpose, it’s a preposition showing the results. 3. Remission = forgiveness (ESV) - literally means to send away or to put apart, a letting go, a leaving behind, a removal. Sin is expunged! 4. “sins” – note it’s plural = literally conveys the idea of missing the mark as when hunting with a bow and arrow. 5. Baptism – The initial outward expression of a repentant heart is this physical act.
