With this type of farming the crops are exposed to the rain, sun, insects, leaching of nutrients, soil erosion, flooding, heavy winds etc… Advantages of open field farming 1. LARGE SCALE (mass) production of crops can be accommodated. 2. IRRIGATION by rain is make use of. 3. LESS EXPNSIVE to start than the controlled environment farms. Disadvantages of open field Farming 1. Farms are exposed to pests and diseases, extreme weathers such as flooding, droughts, heavy winds, leaching of nutrients, soil erosion etc… that may negatively affect production. 2. Farms are exposed to PRAEDIAL LARCENY and ANIMAL DESTRUCTION. 3. Habitat destruction. 4. WEED CONTROL is difficult as weed seeds can be spread by wind, water and insects. 5. Air pollution. Advantages of Controlled environment farming Crops can be PROTECTED from pests, diseases and other hazards such as heavy rain or direct sun. WEED MANAGEMENT is easier as the spreading of weed seeds are limited due to barriers (ceran, glass, plastic...) Less praedial larceny (theft) Protection from pesticide residues. LITTLE SPACE is used to produce more crops (crops can be planted shelves (eg. In green houses, hydroponics) Soil erosion and land slide are prevented. Disadvantages of controlled environment Farming -EXPENSIVE to start and operate. LOW pollination rate If by chance pests and diseases are introduced it can easily spread if not noticed quickly.
