Label: VAGRANT RECORDS Director: CHRIS CARBONI Animation: CARBONI STUDIO http://www.chriscarboni.com Director/animator Chris Carboni in Brooklyn, NY: "The project brief was pretty open. I was contacted by Vagrant Records after they'd seen my previous music video for the track 'Coupe' by Future. "They were interested in doing something similar in style, but brighter, happier, using a bold and colorful palette. They referenced the work of ESPO, and after listening to the track I completely agreed with their general aesthetic direction. I then put together a treatment containing two approaches. Below is an excerpt from the direction they chose: "'The concept here is simple. Notable film romances - from the iconic to the obscure - represented through bold, colorful, animated vignettes, interspersed with illustrative typography and lyric related visual metaphors. "The action is kept mainly within the center of frame, each scene designed to feel like poster art or graffiti tags cleverly transitioning into each other. Think some of the more stylish, minimal Mondo movie posters, then imagine Woody Allen cradling Diane Keaton briefly before transforming into a knife-wielding Patrick Bateman getting elbowed in the ribs by Chloe Sevigny. "The references will be a good balance of the popular and the obscure, and the tone will be playful with a sharp, subversive sense of humor. It'll feel at once both contemporary and nostalgic, just like the track itself.' "Perhaps the biggest creative challenge was figuring out which film references to use and where. I wanted to feature an equal balance of male and female aggressors/victims, I wanted to span all genres, and I wanted to feature both classic and contemporary films. "What made things even more complex was that each character's actions had to be unique enough to connect them with their respective films, but similar enough to relate visually to the characters in the previous and following scenes so that the transitions felt organic and didn't interrupt the flow of the larger narrative. "I started with a list of about 400 films, but it's amazing how many had to be ruled out after considering these parameters. The whole thing felt like putting together a puzzle, figuring out what connected and what didn't. "In tackling this process, the first thing I did was write down all the lyrics. Then, I divided the song into sections and started working on structure. I came up with themes for each section – 'Playful confrontation, Female seduction', 'All out War' – inspired by both lyrics and the general narrative I wanted to tell. "We needed to establish the concept quickly so viewers would catch on immediately and know what to look for. I decided the most direct way to do this would be through the faces of easily recognizable characters, so that section had to come first, which helped inform how the rest of the piece would be organized. "This is a pretty lo-fi video so there wasn't a huge learning curve on the technical end. The biggest challenge was simply drawing...a lot. Schedule: "The treatment contained two concepts and took about a week to put together. The design and storyboarding phase took about two weeks, and then we had six weeks for animation."
