For some unknown reason GM decided to repackage Chevrolet's coveted performance hardware into a trim level instead of its own model, thereby dropping any mention of its legitimacy from both the car's trim tag and vehicle identification number. That means many of Chevy's most valuable and desirable muscle cars ride solely on their often lost or never included build sheets. Of course, any good story has a loophole; and in this case, it comes in the form of the numbers 72 and 76. 72 and 76 are GM's paint codes for Hugger Orange and Daytona Yellow, and Hugger Orange and Daytona Yellow were ONLY available on Super Sports for the 1969 model year. That means this Chevelle's 72 72 trim tag is your guarantee that it's a REAL DEAL SS! If you've been searching for an old school Chevrolet muscle car that has awesome pedigree to match its outstanding good looks, your Chevelle has arrived! Lift the car's double-domed hood and you'll find a fully detailed 396 cubic inch big block V8 which wears a 1968-exclusive 3916323 casting number. Thanks to an overzealous machine shop that ran its milling machine too far forward when decking the block, we can't tell if the big engine is original to the car. But judging by its awesome looks and great performance, it certainly feels right! Air and fuel enter the combustion chambers through a correctly decaled air cleaner, fresh stainless fuel lines and a reliable Holley carburetor. Below that carburetor, a sea of brilliant Chevy Orange paint covers the block from the base of its Winter aluminum intake all the way to the bottom of its stamped steel oil pan. At the back of that intake, a correct points distributor shoots spark through eight 7mm Suppression Cables. Below those cables, bright chrome valve covers perfectly contrast restored cast iron exhaust manifolds. And in front of those valve covers, a tagged Delco Energizer battery rides next to a heavy duty radiator that's equipped with a correct fan shroud. Underneath this awesome A-Body you'll find a fully rebuilt chassis and super solid floorpans that, like the car's exterior panels and big block engine, have been accurately restored to a showroom fresh state. At the center of those floors a rugged M21 Muncie 4-speed transmission sends power to a correct GM 12 bolt rear end. Holding that stellar drivetrain in place is a traditional double A-arm front and four link rear suspension that was fully tagged and chalk marked during the restoration; and presently features factory power steering and correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust flows through aluminized pipes to aggressive chambered mufflers and spotless stainless tips. And power flows to the pavement through slick 17 inch Rocket Racing wheels which spin sticky 225/45 front and 245/40 rear Accelera Alpha radials around fully polished spokes. Open the solid doors on this second generation Chevelle and you'll find a correct GM code 755 black coated fabric interior which appears to have been completely replaced during the car's restoration. Centered in those new components is a duo of fresh bench seats which carry just the right amount of firmness and display no rips or tears at all. Above those seats, a tight black headliner shows none of the drying or fading that is typical of vintage cars; and below those seats like-new carpet props a traditional Hurst shifter between orange-stitched floor mats. In front of the driver, a correct Chevelle SS steering wheel spins in front of an excellent looking dash which features a warp-free pad, fully rebuilt gauges and a direct fit Audiovox stereo. At the sides of the driver, stainless trimmed door panels feature correct "SS396" emblems which add a little visual pop.
